WHERE ARE THE WOMEN?
Answering the question too few are asking.
Have you ever noticed something just a little bit off while sitting in history class? Do you wonder about the unspoken sides of our planet's past? Are you looking for a new perspective on the very male world we live in?
If your answer is yes to any of those questions, then you're in the right place.
We're here to help
What's in a Woman? is a resource for history lovers—or anyone looking for a good story—to learn about the many overlooked women who helped shape our world.
Join us as we explore everything from the artistic (consider Renaissance leaders like Isabella d'Este, or Baroque painters like Artemisia Gentileschi), to the funny (like bawdy musician Gladys Bentley and comedian Phyllis Diller), to the downright strange (think Harriet Chalmers Adams, the woman climbing mountains and sitting in the trenches of World War I in a time where women couldn't even wear pants). We'll even tell you about the somewhat scary ladies, like the bloody Emperor Wu of China. Each post and episode sends you back in time to experience an iconic woman's life in full.
Our site is for anyone with an ear to listen or an eye to read. Some of our stories will have podcast episodes to supplement them and give you a fuller picture of the time period and subject. These will appear roughly monthly, or whenever a topic requires it! If you prefer the written word, peruse our blog for weekly girls-only stories, research, news, and more.
We want to hear from you, too! If you have suggestions on the next lady we should highlight, feel free to shoot us an email—we're happy to have more opportunities to bring fabulous females to light.
Check in every day, or join our mailing list and subscribe to our blog to get notifications and newsletters sent straight to your inbox. We can't wait to show you how great women are.
about me
(and a disclaimer)
Hello, and thanks for finding my blog!
I'm a huge history nerd and I love reading about how our world was shaped. I'm not exactly what you would call a "professional;" my bachelor's degree is in English, writing, and editing, and I'm currently working towards a masters in publishing and writing. However, with a penchant for writing comes a love of reading—and I've read a lot. This site a space for me to share what I love, all while filling a very present gap in modern-day media and education.

So yes, this is a passion project. I do this for fun! But this is where the disclaimer comes in. If you have a PhD in any sort of history (or you just know a lot about a certain person or time period), it's possible you may come across a mistake or misunderstanding in my posts. Feel free to point them out to me! I am learning as I go and I love any extra context or discussion you can provide, and I am happy to update posts as needed if there are any misrepresentations. I research each subject as much as I can, but gaps in information are bound to happen with the limitations of (free) research on these women.
When I'm not reading about awesome historical ladies, you can usually find me playing Animal Crossing or watching silly sports anime like the rest of you. Or, if it's during the school year, I'm most likely doing a pile of copyediting homework.
